Contraception

Women’s Health Clinic

Your consultant will help you to decide which contraceptive options is best suited for you to avoid pregnancy. Although all contraception options help prevent pregnancy, you should always use a condom to avoid any STIs (sexually transmitted infections).

What happens during your appointment?

Your consultant will discuss with you with all the contraceptive options available, along with their pros and cons. We encourage you to ask them any questions you may have before you make a decision.

If you already have an IUD (intrauterine device) and wish to have it removed, our consultant will guide you through the procedure steps during your consultation before having it removed in our onsite day surgery centre.

Contraception options

There are a number of contraceptive options available and and our consultant can help you to make an informed decision of the option you would like to choose.

Condoms

Condoms are available for both male and female. They not only help prevent pregnancy but also keeps you safe from STIs.

Contraceptive pills

There are a number of variations of “the pill” some with a less rigid and tailored regime. It works by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg each month and by thickening the mucus in the womb. This makes it difficult for the sperm to enter the womb and creating an inhospitable environment for an egg to fertilise.

Implants

The implant is placed under your skin in your upper arm by your consultant. It releases hormone progestogen into your blood and prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years. If you have an implant already and want this removed, your consultant can help you with that too.

Injection

Similar to the implant, the injection releases hormone progestogen into your blood stream to help you avert a pregnancy. The affect of a contraceptive injection lasts for somewhere between 8 to 13 weeks.

Patch

The patch, which needs to be changed weekly, is a small sticky covering that releases hormone in to the blood stream to prevent pregnancy. It can also help ease a painful menstrual cycle.

IUD Hormonal coil – Mirena

Mirena, a T-shaped plastic framed device, is a hormonal IUD (intrauterine device) that a consultant inserts into the uterus. It releases a type of hormone progestin into the uterus providing a long-term birth control solution.

Once inserted, you can opt to have this removed at any time.

IUD Copper-based coil

The copper cased coil is an IUD that is inserted by a consultant into the uterus where it releases copper to avoid pregnancy. The coil can be removed at anytime by your consultant.
